The parts of Medicare

Medicare has four main parts. Knowing what each one does makes it easier to compare your choices.

Part A — Hospital insurance

Generally helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice and some home health care.

Part B — Medical insurance

Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services and some medical equipment.

Part C — Medicare Advantage

Plans from private companies that provide Part A and Part B benefits, often with added benefits and a provider network.

Part D — Prescription drug coverage

Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. Available as a standalone plan or included in many Medicare Advantage plans.

Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement

These are two different ways to build your Medicare coverage. Neither is right for everyone — it depends on your doctors, prescriptions, travel and budget.
